There are three main types of solar panels available: monocrystalline, polycrystalline and thin film.

Which type of solar panel is the most efficient?

Monocrystalline silicon is the best material for solar panels and consists of just one piece of silicon. It's a solid block without blemishes, making it very efficient at converting sunlight into electricity. Monocrystalline is the most expensive option, but you definitely get what you pay for.

Polysilicon is made by using a casting mixture of multiple silicon crystals. If single crystal is like single malt whisky, polycrystalline is like blended whisky. In contrast to the "solid bulk" state of single crystals, polycrystals have defects and spaces, and have a distinct blue sheet-like appearance. You'll get larger solar panels that are less efficient, but you'll pay less for them.

Thin-film (or amorphous) solar cells are the least efficient of the three, involving only a thin layer of silicon on top of the electrical components (rather than the entire block). Although films rarely achieve efficiency levels above 15%, they are popular for their light weight and flexibility. Film panels can also be transparent.
