Why Corona Treatment
A variety of processes are used to finish surfaces, including printing, painting, adhering, flocking and
laminating. The adhesion of paints and adhesives to many surfaces, such as frequently-used standard plastics, is weak, however. It is for this reason that the surfaces are often modified in a separate process before finishing actually occurs. This modification is the so-called Corona Treatment. In addition to contaminants or blooming of additives on the surface that prevent direct adhesion to a plastic matrix, the primary reason for the poor adhesion characteristics of plastics is their comparatively low
surface tension. The Corona Treatment increases surface tension, thus enabling better printing/ adhesion on plastic and other surfaces, such as metal, wood, paper, glass, foams and composite materials. In addition, corona is also used for very fine cleaning of surfaces, to increase the hydrophilicity of cloth and other porous materials and to increase roughness.
