Composition of Corten Steel
As a low carbon steel, corten steel usually has less than 0.3% carbon by weight. This small amount of carbon keeps it tough and tough. Weatherproof steel also includes other alloying elements, which help to improve strength, but more importantly, corrosion resistance. Many different alloying elements are used, but the three key elements in weathering steel are nickel, copper and chromium.
Classification of Corten Steel
Corten steel is a series of low carbon alloy steel, which is composed of many brands. Certain grades are proprietary, such as COR-TEN A or COR-TEN B.Patinax weathering steels, which are another group of proprietary grades. All these proprietary levels are similar to ASTM classifications A 242 and A 588.

Corten by Gnee Steel ,0,5 months 1,5 months 6 months 2 years 5 years 22 years 40 years The patina of Cor-Ten evolves over time. It changes from its dark grey mill finish to an orange-reddish brown colour, reaching its final dark purple-brown coloration over the course of time. After some time, there is no coloration change except perhaps to a deeper dark brown. The evolution of colour in Corten is shown on the images.
Characteristics of Corten steel
Corten steel is steel to which a relatively large amount of copper has been added and relatively small amounts of other materials (including nickel Ni, chromium Cr and phosphorus P).
This results in a great increase in corrosion resistance in the untreated state, and in an increase intensile strength.
The corrosion resistance increases because the copper causes a dense, stable layer of oxide toform after a period of time that protects the underlying metal quite well. With regular steel the oxide
layer is not dense and the oxidation process continues without decreasing!
