Johnson Controls Hitachi Scroll Compressor Working Principle:

The compression part of the Hitachi scroll compressor is composed of a pair of conjugated scrolls, one is orbiting scroll and the other is fixed scroll. They form several pairs of crescent-shaped compression chambers (as shown in the figure). The orbiting scroll is in translational motion around the base circle center of the fixed scroll and does not rotate by itself, i.e. the orbiting scroll does not rotate. 

This type of motion compresses the refrigerant in the closed crescent-shaped space outside-in and finally to the discharge hole in the center through which it is discharged. From suction to discharge, gradual compression is done by three pairs of crescent-shaped compression chambers, including not only low pressure and high pressure chambers, but also an intermediate pressure chamber. 

The pressure difference between these chambers will be much smaller than that of the full-pressure (such as reciprocating, rotary) compressor, as the pressure difference of the full-pressure compressor is discharge pressure minus suction pressure. 

Therefore, Hitachi scroll compressor can achieve high efficiency because in the compression process the amount of gas leak between compression chambers is controlled at minimum level.
The suction, compression and discharge of the scroll compressor are a continuous process and can be carried out simultaneously, and no valve plate is needed. So scroll compressor has such characteristics as small rotating torque variation and small discharge pulsation, and low noise and low vibration which can be achieved by reducing the resonance of the pipes.
