A carbon water filter can be any type of water purification system that uses carbon to remove impurities. Common examples include large municipal granular activated carbon(GAC) systems, “charcoal” aquarium filters, and domestic use or countertop water filters, sometimes called point-of-use or domestic drinking water filters. Carbon water filters generally use either granular activated carbon or carbon blocks for purification, both of which remove impurities through a process called adsorption.

What Do Carbon Filters Remove From Water?

 

Water purification removes harmful contaminants from water. Filtration, which physically blocks or chemically removes contaminants, is a different purification technique from reverse osmosis, which filters water through a semi-permeable membrane, and distillation, which vaporizes water to separate it from the contaminants. Carbon filtration is a relatively cheap and efficient way of to purify water.

Washwater or other process streams can also be filtered as part of an overall integrated reuse design and is ideally suited for precipitation and filtration of metals.  

 

 

The size of each filter, the number of filters required, and the type of filter media used depend upon:

 

  01.how small a solid needs to be removed,

 

  02.how dirty the water is,

 

  03.how the water will be used once it is filtered.

 

  04.the source of backwash water needed to clean the filters.

 

 

Concentration of Suspended Solids: The higher the concentration of suspended solids, the larger the diameter of the filter needs to be. All filters have a maximum concentration of suspended solids that can be managed without compromising filter performance.

 

Source of Backwash Water: Backwash water is used to clean the filters and flush out the suspended solids that have been trapped in the media bed. Water for backwashing can come either from the filters themselves or from an external source of clean water (such as a domestic water line or a storage tank).
