Description

                             The strawberry plant has a short thickened stem (called a “crown”) which has a growing point at the upper end and which forms roots at its base (Fig. 1). New leaves and flower clusters emerge from “fleshy buds” in the crown in the early spring.The garden strawberry (or simply strawberry; Fragaria × ananassa) is a widely grown hybrid species of the genus Fragaria, collectively known as the strawberries. It is cultivated worldwide for its fruit.

                               The balance of sweetness and acidity is very important to the taste of a strawberry. As strawberries ripen, their sugar content rises from about 5% in unripe green fruit to 6–9% on ripening. At the same time, the acidity decreases, meaning ripe strawberries taste much sweeter.

                                  If your strawberry plants produce runners, clip most of them to allow the mother plant to produce more fruit. Strawberries need at least 8 hours of full sun each day, and they prefer slightly acidic soil with a pH between 5.5 and 6.8.
