In fact, Sapindus mukorossi shells are better laundry reagents over chemically produced soap or detergents. These washing berries have all the qualities of brightening the fabric of clothes, and cleaning deeply removing all the dirt, and even bacteria or pests. Likewise, the berries entail some fragrances while cleaning. 

Following are the reasons why these organically produced berries are superior for washing over other chemically produced cleaning detergents.   

a.    Most of the laundry detergents are contained with bleaching reagents, such as chlorine and oxidizing agents that are used to whiten clothes and remove stains. However, these bleaching agents can irritate skin, lungs, eyes and further aggravate respiratory problems. 

b.    Commercial washing detergents are packaged with several chemicals so as to add fragrances in the laundry stuffs. Most of the chemicals are even not identified by the customers, as a result, they are prone to the possible health risks and additional environmental degradation pertaining to those chemicals. 

c.    Usually, surfactants—the extremely notorious toxins--are used as cleaning agents in chemical detergents. The chemical components of the surfactants have severe effects on skins and are linked to irritation. 

d.    In order to increase the self-life of the detergents, stabilizers—the preservatives, are used. In fact, the stabilizers being a chemical product in itself are harmful for eyes and lungs, and skin. 

e.    Usually, chemicals are used as brighteners in detergents so as to make the clothes look shinier. Actually, these chemicals accumulate ultraviolet light to which poses great risk to the healthy skin.

Sapindus Mukorossi tree grows uncultivated in poor quality ground and helps fights erosion, particularly in the Himalayan foothills. With the uptake on using these nuts for detergent purposes it also provides much needed income to the local population. It is a relatively hardy tree, being resistant to diseases and insects due to the high amounts of saponin – a natural pest and insect repellent for the tree. This makes the nuts useful in producing organic pesticides as well.
