Craft beer is an English expression meaning “artisanal beer” or “handcrafted beer,” and the concept is used in contrast with the beers mass produced by major beer companies. The transliteration of this term is used in Japanese as well. It is also sometimes called local beer.

With the amendment of the Liquor Tax Act in 1994, the minimum production volume requirement for beer was reduced from 2,000 kiloliters to 60 kiloliters, prompting the emergence of many small scale beer brewing companies equivalent to microbreweries across the country.

Echigo Beer is said to be the first of these breweries in Japan.

Using the keyword “craft beer” in the sense of “beer diligently crafted by artisanal brewers in small scale breweries” or “beer handcrafted by artisanal brewers with an emphasis on quality,” a new market for craft beer began to grow prompted by the expansion of marketing beer from small scale beer producers, and the success of Swan Lake Beer and Yona Yona Ale in expansion focused on
e-commerce.
