Condition

Sodium formate is the simplest organic carboxylate, which is white crystal or powder with a slight odor of formic acid. Slightly deliquescent and hygroscopic. It is easily soluble in about 1.3 parts of water and glycerin, slightly soluble in ethanol and octanol, and insoluble in ether. Its aqueous solution is alkaline. When heated, sodium formate is decomposed into hydrogen and sodium oxalate, and then sodium carbonate is formed. Sodium formate is mainly used in the production of sodium hydrosulfite, oxalic acid and formic acid. In leather industry, it is used as camouflage acid in chrome leather making process, catalyst and stabilizing synthetic agent, and reducing agent in printing and dyeing industry. Sodium formate is harmless to human body and has irritating effect on eyes, respiratory system and skin.
