 Borax is the sodium salt of boric acid, the general name for sodium tetraborate, which is a mineral containing boron. According to the amount of crystalline water containing borax is divided into three types: decahydrate borax, pentahydrate borax and anhydrous borax.

(1) The chemical name of borax decahydrate is sodium tetraborate decahydrate, molecular formula Na2B4O7·10H2O, molecular weight 381.37. Is colorless translucent crystal or white crystalline powder, odorless, salty, density 1.73g/cm3, melting point 75℃. In dry air can slowly lose water and weathering. When heated to 300-400℃, it loses all the crystalline water and transforms into anhydrous sodium tetraborate Na2B4O7. Soluble in water and glycerin, insoluble in alcohol. It melts into a vitreous substance at 878℃.

(2) The chemical name of boron pentahydrate Chemicalbook sand is sodium tetraborate pentahydrate, molecular formula Na2B4O7·5H2O, molecular weight 291.29, is a white crystalline powder, density 1.815g/cm3, when heated to 122℃, the loss of crystalline water, into anhydrous sodium tetraborate.

(3) The chemical name of anhydrous borax is sodium tetraborate, molecular formula Na2B4O7, molecular weight 201.22, is white crystal or vitreous body, there are two forms of α and β : α rhombic crystal, melting point 742.5℃, density 2.28g/cm3, β rhombic crystal, melting point 664℃, density 2.75g/cm3, hygrhygability is strong, soluble in water, slowly dissolved in methanol, can form a concentration of 13-16% solution.

In addition to heat, water and acid resistance, borax has a strong ability to dissolve. When borax is heated, it becomes white and expands, becoming a transparent glass ball in which metal oxides can be dissolved and the original color of the metal can be restored. This is known as the borax ball reaction. Borax can be used in the manufacture of capacitor Chemicalbook, used in various glass products, used in the ceramic industry as glaze. It is used as an antifreeze and anticoagulant in the mining and metallurgical industries and as an electrolyte additive and welding agent in the non-ferrous metals industry. It is also used as a preservative and in the manufacture of herbicides and soil fungicides as well as borides.
