Our logs are predominantly derived from hardwood (broadleaf) species; however some customers prefer cheaper softwood (conifers) despite its disadvantages, which include spitting, lower calorific value and greater frequency of flue cleaning.
We aim to use our timber resource to its full potential throughout our product range: we also sell lower grade firewood which doesn’t meet conventional aesthetic criteria. We also sell second-grade kindling, made of wood scraps and off-cuts from our processing operations. These scraps are sieved to remove dust and contaminants. Although not aesthetically acceptable for selling in shops, they make effective fire-lighters and are very good value for money. Please contact us to find out more.
Importance of constant quality
High quality firewood is one of the main factors for cost-effective, efficient and enjoyable use of your woodstove. It is also essential to comply with the law and avoid contributing to a potential deterioration in urban air quality. Additionally, appropriate maintenance is essential to keep your stove working well and maximise its lifespan.
The quality of seasoning (moisture content) is one of the key determining factors for firewood quality, as it affects its calorific value, ease of combustion and storage. If the wood is too wet, the efficiency is reduced, as some of the heat from the fire is being used to drive off the moisture. If the wood is too dry, it will burn too fast.
The calorific value(CV) is expressed in kWh and is the amount of energy (heat) encapsulated in the wood for a given weight. It increases as moisture content decreases. It is a measure of the energy content of a fuel, and p/kWh so is used to compare cost-effectiveness between fuels.
Appropriate size and shape ensure the logs are easy to store, handle and feed into the appliance.
Contaminants may cause health hazards. Our firewood is free from physical contaminants (e.g. stone, metal, rubber, plastic), and chemical contaminants (e.g. any form of treated or painted wood, MDF, heavy metal compounds, halogenated organic compounds, creosote).
