Neutral Density (ND) filters are designed to reduce transmission evenly across a portion of a specific spectrum. ND filters are typically defined by their Optical Density (OD) which describes the amount of energy blocked by the filter.
Neutral density filters are used to reduce the throughput of light to some desired value over a wide spectral region. Gray glasses are used to reduce the intensity of light from a bright source such as the sun. Black glasses are used to completely block light in the visible region.
