Phenoxyethanol is an organic compound with the molecular formula C8H10O2 that can be synthesized by etherification of ethylene glycol and phenol. It is commonly found in skin creams and sunblocks. Phenoxyethanol is a colorless, slightly viscous liquid with a aromatic odor, slightly soluble in water, easily soluble in ethanol and sodium hydroxide. It has antimicrobial properties (usually in conjunction with quaternary ammonium salts) and is often used as a highly toxic substitute for sodium azide in biological buffer solutions because 2-phenoxethanol is less toxic and chemically inactive against copper and lead.
