Sodium sulfate (also known as sodium sulphate or sulfate of soda) is the inorganic compound with formula Na₂SO₄ as well as several related hydrates. All forms are white solids that are highly soluble in water. With an annual production of 6 million tonnes, the decahydrate is a major commodity chemical product. It is mainly used for the manufacture of detergents and in the Kraft process of paper pulping.^[3]

 

Forms[]

• Anhydrous sodium sulfate, known as the rare mineral thenardite, used as a drying agent in organic synthesis.


• Heptahydrate sodium sulfate, a very rare form.


• Decahydrate sodium sulfate, known as the mineral mirabilite, widely used by the chemical industry. It is also known as Glauber's salt.

APPLICATION

 

1.   For the preparation of sodium sulfide, pulp, glass, water glass, enamel, also used as a laxative and barium salt poisoning antidote. It is with salt and sulfuric acid manufacture of hydrochloric acid by-product.

2.  Chemical used in the manufacture of sodium sulfide, sodium silicate. 

3. Laboratory used to wash the barium salt. The industry used to make caustic soda and Sulfuric acid, also used for paper, glass, printing and dyeing, synthetic fibers, leather, etc.

4.  In organic synthesis in the laboratory of sodium sulfate is one of the most commonly used after processing desiccant.
