Bifidobacterium are ubiquitous, endosymbiotic inhabitants of the gastrointestinal tract, vagina of mammals and other animals. Bifidobacterium bifidum helps the body in absorption of calcium, iron, magnesium and other vitamins and minerals. It produces lactic and acetic acids to inhibit pathogenic bacteria. It also can reduce the incidence of acute diarrhea in infants and is beneficial in the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease.
